What is Geomatics?

Google Earth, GPS and satellite maps. These are all examples of Geomatics at work. After a month of studying this course, I have yet to find a clear-cut definition of what Geomatics really is. Is it Science? Geography? Surveying? Mapping? Maths? Actually, it is all of the above.

If you really want a definition, according to RMIT’s Mathematical and Geospatial Science brochure:

Geomatics is a spatial information technology program that uses computer based Geographic Information System (GIS) to measure, manage, map and analyse geospatial data.

Get it? No? Me either. That’s just too much to remember and a mouth full to say if I were to explain what Geomatics is to someone over and over and over again.

Fortunately, I stumbled upon this unsourced quote and I think it sums up what Geomatics is pretty well:

MSN

MSN. I'm sure we all have one. Mine has been serving me faithfully for almost 6 years now. MSN has helped me keep in touch with friends, share youtube links, transfer all sorts of files and stalk people! (just kidding, I have facebook for that! (not kidding)).

After using MSN for a rather long time, I've come to realise that my internet lingo differs from my normal speech. How? One thing for sure is that you will never catch me going

GAHHHHHHHHHHH! or hehehehehehe*gigglesnort*....

or using lulz and lol in my speech.

The point I'm trying to make is that the way I converse on MSN and in person are kinda different. Not sure why, but I'm guessing it got something to do with not speaking to a person face-to-face. Therefore, leading us to say stuff we wouldn't dare say in front of others or wouldn't dream of saying out loud.

That's my theory anyways.

First Official Post

For a while now, I've been aching to start a blog. Why? Maybe it was to improve my IT skills but when I thought about it, maybe it was because everyone else was doing it. But when I thought about it some more, maybe it was because I wanted a place to document events in my life which I enjoyed or found interesting (after all, there's only so much the grey matter in my head can store).

Whatever the reason is, right now I am certain of one thing and that is I want this blog to be a honest one.

One which is not influenced by the thoughts of others,
One which expresses my feelings truthfully,
One which does not contradict myself,
One with integrity.

With that said, wish me good luck. I am gonna need it.
